About Us

Women in ICT Foundation is a non-for-profit organization that focuses on providing technology education for women and young girls to resolve the problem of gender parity and under-representation of women in the technology industry, stem profession and in the workplace.

Our mission is to provide a platform for women to explore opportunities in technology and leadership roles as well as foster an inclusive corporate environment to make a significant contribution towards the advancement in technology.

Our primary aim is to inspire, enable and support all girls and women in all walks of life using ICT to give them a way for realizing their dreams, overcoming problems and exploring their potential for success. Women in ICT foundation empowers women through all aspects of life, at home, in education and at work.

Women in ICT is legally registered and incorporated in Nigeria under the Nigeria’s Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC).

Issues & Challenges

It is clear to see that women are underrepresented in STEM roles. Only 19% of the people working in tech in the Africa are female. Even though the tech industry is becoming more diverse and companies are creating resource groups to help them grow their diverse team, the gender gap is still an issue which needs tackling.

Women face unique obstacles when it comes to attending school and working in STEM fields. Some are listed below:

  • Higher demands: Women report being asked to provide more evidence or being held to higher standards than their male colleagues.
  • Family pressure: Many women in STEM professions report being told by a coworker that they should work less after having children.
  • Feminine roles: Women report feeling pressure from coworkers to play a feminine role, such as office mother or  an otherwise demure and dainty image in the workplace.
  • Mistaken identity: Women working in STEM — report being mistaken for custodial or administrative staff, rather than being recognized as the scientists and engineers they are.
Why are females underrepresented in STEM fields?
 
 
Reasons could be that they are less aware of it or do not want to appear to complain because of a fear of jeopardizing their career. Another aspect of women dropping out of STEM careers or out of the workforce entirely is the loss of income to the nation’s economy
